Melzenia Franklin

WATER VALLEY—Melzenia Franklin, 79, of Water Valley died Sunday, May 13, 2018, at her home.

  Visitation was held Friday, May 18, in Spring Hill North M.B. Church, at Water Valley. Her homing celebration was held Saturday, May 19, also in the church. Interment followed in Bayson Chapel Cemetery. Townes Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Martha Odom Duke Herron


BANNER—Martha Odom Duke Herron, age 60, died May 16, 2018, at her home in Banner.

  Born March 3, 1958, in Vernon, Ala., Martha was a daughter  of the late Edna Faye and Raymond Odom. She enjoyed country music and dancing and was a die-hard Alabama football fan. She delighted in hearing the sound of rain on the roof and she could bake a marvelous apple pie and make delicious chicken and dumplings. Martha was a homemaker, who loved her family, especially her grandchildren.

  Visitation was held Monday, May 21, in Seven Oaks Funeral Home from 5-7 p.m. The funeral service was held Tuesday, May 22, at 11 a.m. in the Henry Chapel of the funeral home with Bro. Dan Dickerson officiating. Burial was in Vernon, Ala. in Bethel Cemetery at 3 p.m., also on Tuesday.

  Martha is survived by her son, Brandon Van Duke of Banner; a daughter, Brandi Nicole Herron of Byhalia; three sisters, Ruby Millican of Plano, Texas, Lilly Poyner of West Point and Bonnie Jones (James) of Paris; one brother, Jimmy Fred Odom of Vernon, Ala.; and two grandchildren, Mackenzie Leigh Duke and Breanna Renee Duke, both of Banner.


Margaret Elizabeth Groves Hunsicker

WATER VALLEY—Margaret “Marguerite” Elizabeth Groves Hunsicker passed quietly into the arms of the Lord on Thursday, May 10, 2018.


A memorial service was held at 1 p.m. Monday, May 14, in the Episcopal Church of the Nativity, 609 North Main Street, Water Valley. The internment followed in Pinecrest Memorial Gardens, south of Water Valley. The family received friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

Born November 3, 1924, in Water Valley, Mrs. Hunsicker was a daughter of the late Marvin Braxton and Carrie Lou Rhodes Groves. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Herbert Hunsicker, Sr.; her three sisters, Frances Groves Myers, Mary Nell Groves Gurner, and Joan Groves;  brothers-in-law, John Myers and Jack Gurner; and son-in-law, Hudson Still.

  She  is survived by her son, Dr. John H. Hunsicker (Lynda) and her daughter, Susan Joyce Hunsicker Still; three grandchildren, Dr. Walker F. Hunsicker, Carrie E. Hunsicker, Brandy Farlow Russell; one step-granddaughter, Amy E. Eifling; and four great grandchildren.

  Marguerite graduated from Water Valley High School in 1942, and was likely the last surviving member of her class. A member of the “Greatest Generation” she served during World War II as a civilian secretary at the POW Camp at Camp McCain in Grenada. There she met a young soldier from Ohio and they were married after the war. They celebrated their 52nd anniversary before his death. For most of her life she was an active homemaker. She was devoted to the Episcopal Church in Water Valley, and was a lifetime member of the Altar Guild until health issues prevailed.


Carolyn Young Miles


WATER VALLEY—Carolyn Young Miles, age 76, died peacefully at her home in Water Valley on May 20, 2018.

Born March 16, 1942, in Greenville, Carolyn was a daughter of the late Edward Joseph and Thelma Rowlen Shaffer. She was an active member of Camp Ground Baptist Church and a retired seamstress for Big Yank  Industries in Water Valley. She enjoyed cooking, shopping and sewing. Carolyn raised Pomeranian dogs and always had some as pets. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family, her grandchildren,and her friends.

Visitation was held Tuesday, May 22, from 5-7 p.m. in Camp Ground Baptist Church near Water Valley. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 23, in the church with Bro. Jerry King officiating. Burial will be in Camp Ground Cemetery with Tony Miles, Brian Crawford, Johnny Coaten, Guy Coaten, Collin Crawford and John Gordon as pallbearers.

Survivors include her sons, Jerry Miles (Katie) of Tiplersville and Perry Joe Miles (Melanie) of Memphis; and six grandchildren, Tony Miles, Michael Moudy, Melissa Radcliff, Rhonda Moudy, McKayla Patterson, and Audrea Hobby.

  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Miles; two daughters, Patricia Hobby and Janie Miles; and one son, Robert Barnes, Jr.


Teresia Vaughn Olivis


WATER VALLEY—Teresia Vaughn Olivis, age 70, of Water Valley passed away peacefully on May 19, 2018, at Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo.

Born November 25, 1947, in Water Valley, Teresia was a daughter of the late Houston and Jenny Lou Vaughn. Teresia was a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and her dog, Lu. Teresia graduated from Water Valley High School in 1966 and continued her education at Northwest Community College in Senatobia. She was an active, lifelong member of First Christian Church of Water Valley. On February 24, 1979, Teresia married the love of her life, Larry Fred “Pete” Olivis. They made their home in Water Valley and shortly afterward welcomed a daughter. The two were happily married for 16 years, until Pete’s unexpected passing in August, 1995.

A memorial service was held Tuesday, May 22, at 10 a.m. in First Christian Church, with Bro. David Freeman officiating. Seven Oaks Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include her daughter, Wendy Olivis Pratt (Chad) of Water Valley; two grandchildren, Olivia and Pete Pratt of Water Valley; two sisters, Alice Allen (Jim) of Oxford and Judy Lantrip (Bill) of Southaven;  two brothers, David Vaughn of Olive Branch and Kenny Vaughn (Bonnie) of Ashland, Ky.; other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Houston Greenwood and Jenny Lou Simpson Vaughn, her husband, Larry Fred “Pete” Olivis; her sister, Diane Sexton and a sister-in-law, Janice Vaughn. 

The family request that memorials be made to Sanctuary Hospice House, 5159 Main Street, Tupelo, MS 38801.
