Jean Burns Baker


WATER VALLEY—Funeral services for Jean Burns Baker, age 89, of Water Valley, were held at 2 p.m. Monday, April 16, 2018, in Sylva Rena Baptist Church. Burial followed in the Sylva Rena Cemetery. Visitation was held from 1-2 p.m. in the church. Mortimer National Funeral Home of Grenada was in charge of arrangements.


Jean died Saturday, April 14, in Baptist Memorial Hospital—North Mississippi at Oxford. Born October 26, 1928, in Yalobusha County, she was a daughter of the late Thomas Harwell and Letha Barton Burns. She was employed by Big Yank as a supervisor. Jean was a member of Sylva Rena Baptist Church and the VFW Ladies Auxiliary.


Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Garner Baker.


Survivors include one daughter, Shirley Loges (Max) of Port Arthur Texas; a son Thomas G. Baker (Lisa) of Oakland; four grandchildren, Lea Wallis, Thomas B. Baker, Sasha Hyde, and Amanda Dawn Baker-Wortham; and eight great-grandchildren.


William Carmichael, III


WATER VALLEY – Mr. William Carmichael, III, 45, passed away, Friday, April 13, 2018, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Coleman Funeral Home of Oxford is in charge of arrangements.


Mr. Carmichael was born in Bay City, Texas. He was described as an extremely hard working man who was thought very highly of in his workplace. Mr. Carmichael worked as a granite fabricator for over four years and he absolutely loved his work. He was also known as an avid outdoors man. Mr. Carmichael was especially fond of fishing. However, he cared for nothing more than spending time with his friends and family. 


Mr. Carmichael is survived by his wife, LaTrisha Calhoun of Water Valley; his father, William Carmichael, II, of Damon, Texas; one son, Devin Carmichael of Water Valley; two step-sons, Wallace (Vanessa) Rayburn and Joshua (Ashley Johnson) Rayburn, both of Water Valley; one step-granddaughter, Kaitlyn Rayburn of Water Valley; two step-brothers, James Conklin of Conroe, Texas, and Robert Conklin of Spring, Texas; one sister, Deborah Bass of Lumberton, Texas; and his step-mother, Lynn Jones of Victoria, Texas. 


Mr. Carmichael was preceded in death by his mother, Evelyn Sanders.


Sammie Carothers Sutherland


WATER VALLEY—Sammie Carothers Sutherland, 85, of Water Valley, died Saturday, April 14, 2018, in Baptist Memorial Hospital—North Mississippi at Oxford.


She was born June 27, 1932 in Lafayette County. Sammie worked at Big Yank Industries for many years and then worked for Glenn Slacks, where she retired. She was a member of Mt. Liberty Church in Calhoun County. She enjoyed cooking, flowers, gardening, and spending time with her family and grandchildren.


Visitation was  held from noon until 2 p.m. on Monday, April 16, in Seven Oaks Funeral Home at Water Valley. The funeral service was held following visitation in the Henry Chapel of the funeral home with Bro. Dan Dickerson officiating. Burial was in Mt. Liberty Cemetery in Calhoun County.


Sammie is survived by her daughter, Cindy Dickey (Ronnie) of Water Valley; her son, Tim Sutherland (Vickie) of Pittsboro; four grandchildren, Lacey Caine, Robert Samuel Sutherland, Elizabeth Keel and Dillon Dickey; and four great-grandchildren, Georgia Caine, Ian Caine, Charlsy Sutherland, and Katie Sutherland.


She was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel Arthur and Cubelle Tatum Carothers; her husband, Toy Junior Sutherland; and her twin sister, Cubelle Majure.


Johnny Frank Wilson


 A memorial service for Johnny Frank Wilson, who died December 24, 2017, will be held Saturday, April 28, 2018, at 2 p.m. in the Elam Baptist Church at Coffeeville. A reception will follow at the church. All family and friends are invited to attend.
