Gaynell Marcie Burns 


OAKLAND—Memorial services for Gaynell Marcie Burns, age 55, of Oakland will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Monday, February 26, 2018, in VFW Post 4100, located at 11535 Highway 315, Water Valley. Mortimer National Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements.

Marcie died Saturday, February 17, 2018, at her home.

Born October 22, 1962, in Kankakee, Illinois, she was a daughter of the late Joseph S. Alldread and Sarah Brown Alldread. She was employed by Sayle Oil Company as an area manager until her retirement. She was a Baptist.

In addition to her parents, Marcie was preceded in death by her daughter, Mandy Leigh Grinstead.

She is survived by her husband, J. Wayne Burns of Oakland; one step-daughter, Kellie Burns Rogers of Mathews, Missouri; a step-son, Will Burns of Water Valley; two sisters, Margie Kinkin of Braidwood, Illinois and Vicky Jo Newsome of Savannah, Tenn.; four brothers, Roy Alldread of Grand Forks, North Dakota, Mike Alldread of Mobile, Ala., Tony Alldread and Tim Alldread, both of Grenada; and seven grandchildren.

Linda (Cindy) Chandler 


INVERNESS, FLA.—Linda (Cindy) Chandler passed away February 12, 2018, in Citrus Health and Rehabilitation Center in Inverness, Florida.

Born June 23, 1954, Cindy was a daughter of the late Jessie and Billie Chandler. For 38 years, she was a teacher and school counselor who helped students navigate very personal and challenging situations. She loved sweater vests, cars, Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints and a host of friends.

Cindy is survived by three sisters, Melissa Jo Smith (Larry), Sherry Crenshaw (Ron), both of Water Valley, and Rita Graham (Michael) of Pontotoc; and one brother, Billy Chandler (Terri) of Batesville.

In addition to her parents, Cindy was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas Chandler and a sister, Bonnie Chandler. A private memorial will be held at a later date.


Isabel M. Fly


VIRGINIA BEACH, VA.—Isabel M. Fly, age 97, entered into eternity January 29, 2018. She was born November 20, 1920.

She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband, Captain William E. Fly, as well as her parents, Jose F. Morals and Isabel Gallardo, and her beloved son, Greg Fly. Captain Fly was a native of Water Valley. He graduated from Water Valley High School  in 1934 and from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1940.

She is survived by a daughter, Sandra Weiermann (Donald); grandchildren, Kurt, Lynn (Matt), Christina, and Mark (Heather); two great-grandchildren; a niece, Diane, and a  nephew Van (Gloria).

Isabel loved caring for her family. She was a skilled baker and cooked her husband and children their dinners with love. When she lived in  Jacksonville, Fla., she served as a Girl Scout leader in her daughter’s troop. In her earlier years, she enjoyed being a part of Grey Ladies Hospital Volunteering. Isabel was an early member of Little Creek Chapel Altar Guild, as well as a parishioner at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church. She was an avid golfer and could be seen on many golf courses around Virginia Beach.

During Captain Fly’s naval career, including his time as commanding officer of the USS Essex, she was a most gracious hostess for many functions. 

The funeral service was held Monday, February 5, at 11 a.m. in St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church, Virginia Beach, Va.


Charles Arthur McCain


TAYLOR—Charles Arthur McCain, 71, died Wednesday, February 14, 2018, at his home in Taylor.

  

The funeral service was held Saturday, February 17, at 2 p.m., in the chapel of Waller Funeral Home with Rev. Brad Burnett officiating. Burial followed in Yocona Cemetery. Visitation was prior to the service at the funeral home.

Born in Taylor, Mr. McCain was a son of the late William Elton and Ivy Mae Murchison McCain. Charlie was a millwright and worked for North Mississippi Conveyor, welding and building in factories. He was a Mason and enjoyed being with his friends and attending his Navy reunion. He was a veteran of the United States Navy where he achieved the rank of BM3-Petty Officer 3rd Class, serving during the Vietnam War.

Survivors include his wife, Lynda Tatum McCain of Taylor; daughters, Misty Gale Anderson (Gene) and Rebecca Lynn Moorehead (Chris), both of Oxford; a brother, James Elton “Butch” McCain of Granby, Mo.; and five grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Disabled Veterans, P. O. Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45250-0301, or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105. The flag of the United States Navy was flown at Waller Funeral Home in honor of Charlie’s service to our country.


Hazel Lavelle Potts


WATER VALLEY—Hazel Lavelle Potts, age 96, passed away Sunday, February 18, 2018, in Yalobusha General Hospital at Water Valley.

Born April 20, 1921 in Calhoun County, Mrs. Lavelle was a daughter of the late Mack and Lela Dickey Prestage. She was married to Edward Potts and after his death, she worked at the Water Valley Hospital. She also worked at the Bruce School Center as a cafeteria worker and school bus driver, and at the North Mississippi Mental Health Center, where she worked for 17 years before retiring. For many years Miss Lavelle wrote the Mt. Liberty News for the North Mississippi Herald. She was known by most everyone simple as “Miss Lavelle.” She enjoyed every day of work because she could stop on her way home and visit and pray with sick friends, which she continued to do until her passing. Those who knew Miss Lavelle knew that her lifelong love was Mt. Liberty Church and all her relatives and friends who attended there over the years.  

The funeral service will be held Thursday, February 22, in Mt. Liberty Church with visitation beginning at noon. The service will begin a 2 p.m, with Rev. Kevin Jackson and Rev. Billy Childs officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with Gary Potts, Allen Dickey, Buster Potts, Billy Stark, Phillip Dickey, and Jerry Smith as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearer will be Jimmy Pinkerton. Seven Oaks Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include three sons, Kenneth Potts (June) of Memphis, Thomas Potts (Kathleen) of Chicago, and Richard Potts (Annalisa) of Memphis; six grandchildren, April Boleware of Memphis, Geoffrey Potts of Chicago, Beth Alberts of Chicago, Evan Potts of Memphis, Jennifer Slayton of Memphis, and Shannon Haynes of Alamo, Tenn.; a brother, Roy Dean Prestage (Rose) of Madison, Wisc.; two nephews; one niece; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Potts in 1973, her mother in 1970, her father in 1990, her sister in 2005, and her baby brother in 1931.


She requested in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to Mt. Liberty Church or the cemetery fund.


Glenna Sue Sutherland


WATER VALLEY—Glenna Sue Sutherland, age 81, of Water Valley (formerly of California) died Friday, February 16, 2018, in Yalobusha Medical Facility. 

She was born in Chickasha, Okla., January 8, 1937 to the late Sewell Glen Wynn and Mattie Ethelene Akin. Glenna worked as a waitress and enjoyed singing and writing.

Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 20, in Oak Hill Cemetery at Water Valley. Family members will take part in her Celebration of Life Service with scripture reading and singing of hymns. Seven Oaks Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include two daughters, Shauna Lee Garcia and Robin Denise Ridley; three sons, Clayton Scott Forbes, Claude Michael Forbes and Jeffry Thomas Forbes; and three sisters, Becky Brown and Terri Darling, both of Water Valley, and Mollie Sandoval of California.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Sutherland; one son, Charles Andrew Forbes; and one brother, Sewell Glen Wynn, Jr.
