Returning to Water Valley after nearly three years, renowned photographer Carolyn Drake has come back to town and is looking for members of the Yalobusha County area to participate in a creative documentary photography project about Mississippi.

Drake is in town on commission from The Do Good Fund, a public charity based out of Columbus, Georgia that collects, supports, and celebrates Southern photography. In 2015 Drake’s photographs from Alabama were acquired by The Do Good Fund, and earlier this year the Georgian institution decided to commision Drake to create new photographs for their collection. She decided to return to Water Valley, a town she holds very dear to her heart.

Drake is looking for folks in Water Valley and across the county to collaborate with for the project. If you, your family, or friends are interested in having your picture taken, she would love to hear from you. The photo session could involve taking photos of you at home, cooking, playing, working, hunting, praying, even brushing your teeth. She is interested in the mysterious and quiet moments of daily life, as well as using the imagination to act out memories, and dreams, and just seeing what quirky and surprising moments happen spontaneously in the shared time between photographer and subject.

Drake is a renowned photographer who has traveled the world extensively working on projects for publications like National Geographic. She has also received numerous awards including a Guggenheim Fellowship for her work in Central Asia.

If you’d like to have your picture taken by Ms. Drake, call her, send a text, or email.
